Signs of Shyness in Women

Shyness affects many women, ranging from common symptoms like having nervous feelings toward meeting new people to more serious conditions such as social phobia or anxiety. Most women eventually will "come out of their shell" over time, but it can be hard to tell the difference between a shy woman and a woman who just simply isn't interested. Most of the symptoms of shyness are internal, but there are a few external signs that you should recognize.

Shyness can reveal itself in many ways, and one of the most common signs is a woman's reluctance to make or maintain eye contact. If a woman keeps her head down while she speaks or seems to have trouble maintaining eye contact with a person who is speaking with her, it doesn't necessarily mean she's not interested in engaging in conversation. The reluctance to make eye contact in shy people mostly stems from their insecurities and anxieties.

Granted, not every woman is going to dress like Madonna, but more often than not shy women avoid wearing clothes that flatter or draw attention. They might choose to dress conservatively no matter how attractive they might be. They will rarely wear clothing that displays their midriff or cleavage or articles that are tight and revealing. These symptoms of shyness generally stem from self-consciousness or insecurities, even if they are unfounded and irrational.

Shy women might choose to listen rather than to speak.

Kiki Weingarten, co-founder of DLC Executive Coaching and Consulting in New York City, said in an article featured in "Self" magazine, "Women are socialized to be less outgoing and less assertive than men. This often translates to more of a hesitancy to speak, sound out, say 'hi' and take initiative socially, professionally and personally." This doesn't mean that women are raised to be shy, but depending on a woman's upbringing, she might be more reserved than others. Over time, most shy women will open up with people they know well and trust.

Many shy women blush when they are spoken to.

Blushing is usually a dead giveaway that a woman is shy, especially if she is blushing in a situation that doesn't normally warrant it. Blushing is especially noticeable in women who have light or fair skin. Blushing is the result of a rush of blood flow to the face, neck and ears, and will cause a woman to feel hot or flushed. Blushing is also accompanied by sweaty hands. Blushing can be caused by embarrassment, excitement or anxiety. In some instances, a woman will blush when she is approached by a man that she finds attractive.
