The Signs of a Liar in a Relationship

One lie can be all it takes to break a relationship. Knowing the difference between the truth and a lie can be determined by a person's behavior. It is important to pay very close attention to this person because often times a person's reaction during a lie are involuntary. Regardless of these signs, your instincts will never lie to you. If a person has lied in the past, chances are high that he is lying again.

Listen carefully and look for inconsistencies. If a person is lying, she can/will easily forget some of the details from the original story, so ask her to repeat it and then check for the inconsistencies. Sometimes a liar will try to buy time by asking you to repeat the question. When a liar feels threatened, sometimes she will provide too many details, therefore trying to compensate for the lie. If the person will not answer your question directly, the person may be lying.

Look for visual cues such as difficulty swallowing or lack in eye contact. These are common signs of lying. The liar may also be displaying a gesture that doesn't match the speech. For instance, frowning while saying something positive. Touching of the face or putting the hand over the mouth while talking are more signs of lying. If the person can't sit down and look at you directly, or tries to move away or toward an exit, the person is most likely lying.

Be aware of simple Freudian slips such as, "I was at the movies with Allan, uh I mean Allison." In which case, it would be wise to figure out who "Allan" is or question "Allison." If you feel you are being lied to, get to the bottom of it. But understand that you may not always find the evidence you need to know someone is lying, in which case, it is best to trust your instincts.

Many liars tend to start their sentences with a statements like "to be perfectly honest" or "quite frankly." If a person starts there sentence like this, be aware that he could be telling a lie but do not draw your conclusion from that alone. Look for additional signs and if one follows the other, they are most likely lying. If the person is providing too much information or details, the response could be rehearsed, in which case it could be a lie.
