How to Apologize to Your Girlfriend for Arguing

Getting into an argument, big or small, usually makes someone feel pretty rotten. If you and your girlfriend have just had it out and you're more concerned with making things better than figuring out which one of you is wrong or right, step up and apologize. Even if she's not ready to listen to you immediately, remain calm and allow your heartfelt emotions to reach her with a pure, bonafide apology.

Let the dust settle. Give it a few moments -- or days -- to set in before you hop up and try to make things better. Use the time to analyze your feelings and determine what went wrong in the conversation. Let her know that you will give her some time so she doesn't assume that you just don't care.

Try to talk to her in private and when neither of you is pressed for time. Know that in your attempts to apologize there is a likeliness that she might want to rehash the situation and open everything up for conversation.

Agree to agree or disagree. Analyze the result of your conversation with her and determine if it's more important for you to smooth things over or to be right. If both of you decide to be stubborn, decide where you want to go from here. If apologizing or at least being the one who says "I'm sorry" is what you want to do, proceed.

Use empathy in your mission to apologize. Tell her exactly how you feel and let her know that you're sorry that the argument developed. Explain what she means to you and how you feel about your relationship. Take her on a brief trip down memory lane with a few examples of things you've done together and the way you felt.

Look her in her eye and express your feelings sincerely. Tell her again just how sorry you are and ask her if there's anything you can do to make things better. Give her a moment to take it all in. Apologize one final time saying any last thoughts that come to mind.
