How to Let Go of Somebody You Love

Ending a relationship with someone you care deeply about can top the list as one of the hardest things you'll do. Of course, it's easy to end a relationship with someone after an argument or if the breakup is mutual. When you still love the person, the fresh feelings you have and the routine of being with her can often get in the way of successfully letting her go.

Be sure letting your partner go is something you want to do. No one wants to go back and forth when it comes to his feelings, so allow the both of you some time to think beyond recent activity before you end it. If breaking up is inevitably your final decision, prepare to communicate with your partner.

Share your feelings for ending the relationship and allow her to respond. Remain calm and don't make the focus of the conversation accusatory. Avoid playing the blame game; concentrate on expressing your reasons for wanting to end things.

Communicate effectively. Don't allow the conversation to linger without getting to the point. Be confident and direct in your approach by being clear and concise in your explanations and wishes. Do not divert the talk with unrelated topics.

Give examples for your cause. Express how you were affected by certain situations and what emotions you felt such as "I was hurt by..." or "I get upset when I hear you say...". This will help pinpoint the exact issues that are troubling you.

Make things final by setting boundaries and new rules. Make your breakup an even one by cutting off seeing each other, and allow yourself to heal. Do not accept phone calls, texts or emails when your ex wants to check in on you "just because;" you don't want to confuse things.

Move on with your life by filling in your newly available schedule with special projects or activities with others. Go out to dinner with friends and family, and get caught up with the things on your to-do list that you may have put off. When you feel like you're ready, get back out there and meet new people who may be more suitable for you to date in the future.

Maintain a distance from your ex for at least a few months to a year before you attempt just maintaining a friendship. Allow yourself to really have him "out of your system" before making the effort of finding out what's going on in his life and hanging out again.
