Common Reasons for Ending a Relationship

A relationship may come to an end for a variety of reasons. Some couples may cite a lack of communication, constant arguments and disagreements, decreased amounts of intimacy or changed feelings for each other. Others may cite more obvious reasons such as infidelity, abuse or dishonesty. And many more may believe the relationship just ran its course.

Modern technology has helped redefine the definition of infidelity. In addition to cheating or having an affair, infidelity is also tied to racy emails, saucy text messages and social websites such as Ashley Madison and Facebook. What starts off as an innocent friend request from a long-lost friend may have the potential to turn into something more. And, oftentimes, it's not the spouse who catches on, it's friends, family members and even the children who figure out the truth.

Some relationships seem like more trouble and work than they are worth. Feelings start to fade, communication breaks down and the desire to be with each other wanes. At first, perhaps you had the determination to make things work but unexpected circumstances, like a partner who is unwilling to put in the same amount of effort to save the relationship, may cause the relationship to end. "Endings are a part of life," explains Dr. Henry Cloud, an author and blogger for "Psychology Today" magazine. "If you do [decide to end a relationship], you might find yourself getting unstuck and entering into a whole new season of life."

Like the old adage goes, the grass is always greener on the other side. Perhaps you or your partner met someone exciting and new that better meets your needs. Maybe you've been reminiscing about an ex. Whatever the reason, some couples choose to end their relationship because of their feelings for someone else. Whereas the current relationship seems boring and stale, the idea of starting a new relationship with someone else is just about as good enough reason as any to end the current relationship.

In the movie "Eat, Pray, Love" the main character made marriage and having children her number one goal in life. With time, though, her priorities and desire suddenly shifted to a more personal level. She didn't want to be married anymore. She wanted to focus on her herself. Perhaps one party in the relationship experienced a similar shift in plans. Maybe one partner desires to live someplace else or start a new career and places all their time, energy and focus on whatever goals they have in mind. Without any focus, thought or care, a relationship will fall apart and end.
