How to Deal With a Broken Heart as a Teenager

A broken heart is no different from any other part of your body. If you broke your leg skiing, you'd need to seek help, and then you'd need time to heal. Eventually, you'd be back on those skis again. Work through the process and know that with each day that goes by, you're likely to feel better and better.

Instructions

    1

Go off to a place where you can be alone and cry your heart out. Let it rip and get it over and done with. You won't be able to think about anything else in the first few hours and days except how bad you feel, so don't expect yourself to. You'll experience a whole onslaught of different emotions, from misery to anger. Keep telling yourself that it's perfectly normal.

    2

Find someone to talk to. After you've cried it out on your own, vent. If you have supportive parents or a sibling you can go to with what you're feeling, that's great. Otherwise, a friend who has been through what you're going through can be helpful. And most schools have counselors on staff whose job it is to help students through difficult emotional times.

    3

Remind yourself how terrific you are and what that other person is going to be missing without you in his life. Make a list of what you think are the five best things about you. Post copies on your bedroom mirror or inside your notebook -- somewhere you'll see it several times a day so it can remind you of all that's right about you. Don't blame yourself for the loss and don't get down on yourself. You didn't do anything to deserve what you're going through.

    4

Stay as busy as possible. Tackle projects that you've been putting off or just didn't have time for when you were spending almost every waking moment either with the person you've lost or thinking about her. This won't keep you from thinking about her still, but you'll do it with less frequency as time goes on. You'll also get a lot done and this, too, will help you feel good about yourself.

    5

Call the friends you used to hang around with before you got involved with the person you've lost. Chances are you started neglecting them a little during the course of your relationship, and they'll be glad to have you back. In almost every relationship, people give up at least one little something they loved doing because the other person doesn't share their enthusiasm for it. Remember what it was and go do it again.
