Dating Stages in a New Relationship

New relationships are full of fun and discovery while getting to know each other. It starts with a first date and moves up to seeing each other regularly and sharing intimate details about your lives. It's difficult to jump from the jittery excitement of a first date to the ease and comfort that comes with a long-term relationship, which is why there are several stages in between.

The beginning of any relationship starts with a chase, regardless of whether the man or the woman takes the role of the pursuer. Everyone has had the experience of asking yourself if you call or don't call, holding the phone in your hands paralyzed in a mental debate because of your fear of appearing to interested. The chase is the fun part--the part where you don't know if you're going to be together yet, but you're willing to take the chance.

The happy cloud is the place we all go when we've just started dating someone exclusively and we're totally in love. He's perfect, she's perfect, everything's perfect--and you have to share your happiness with the world. Your partner can do no wrong when you're on the happy cloud; even personal habits you might ordinarily consider gross become cute and endearing during this stage. The only problem with the happy cloud is that eventually it has to end, so it's important to enjoy it while it lasts.

The next stage of a relationship comes after the happy-cloud stage, when you start to get a little more settled in yourselves as a couple and you really get to know each other. This is when you stop hiding any strange habits, confess your embarrassing guilty pleasures and show your partner that you're not really perfect, and that you're okay with that. The imaginary ideal you've created about your partner gets replaced with the person he or she really is.

A relationship solidifies and gets truly serious when you reach the stage of being completely comfortable with your partner. At this point you know each other so well you start to feel totally in sync. Once you reach this stage in a relationship, it is not unusual to take it to the next level, such as saying the infamous "L" word and moving in together.
