How to Be a Good Boyfriend in a Long-Distance Relationship

There are many reasons why a relationship might have to go long distance. Sometimes someone will attend school out of state, leaving a boyfriend or girlfriend back at home. Other times a relationship will start long distance, as is often the case with online dating. No matter how it happens, it is possible to maintain a healthy relationship at a distance.

Maintain calm. If your girlfriend is moving away, the last thing you want to do is smother her completely in the final moments you have together. Be supportive and comforting while you are still together.

Keep regular contact. It is important to show that you still have feelings for your girlfriend, even if she is far away. Calling and emailing on a regular basis is a good way to show that you care. However, as in the first step, do not smother her. Distance, though difficult, can be a good thing for a relationship, allowing the moments together to feel more important. Because of this, calling or emailing too regularly may rub your girlfriend the wrong way. Finding the correct balance will take a little time but will prove ultimately useful.

Find time to visit. Even if it is only for a day or two, being able to visit, to be present physically in your girlfriend's life, will not only keep her interested, but allow you to feel close once more. This will also help to quell any desires you may have for physical contact with another while she is gone.
