When you're dating someone, you trust that your significant other is with you for the right reasons -- love, respect and the desire to build a future together. If you think the person you're dating has other motives for being with you, break up with him. Everyone deserves better than a person who isn't in the relationship for love and positive, healthy reasons. Be safe when you break up and be respectful of yourself and the person you were dating.

Ask your significant other to meet you. If you suspect he could become violent at the news of the breakup, arrange a public meeting at a park or a restaurant. If not, meet wherever you choose.
2Let a friend know that you're breaking up with the person you're dating. Even if you suspect no problems, it's better that a friend is aware you're leaving your boyfriend, especially if he was dating you for other reasons -- you can't be sure how he'll react.
3Explain that you don't think he's in the relationship with you for the right reasons. Trust is one of the most important aspects of a romantic relationship; when you can't trust his motives for being with you, you can't be with him.
4Listen to what he has to say in his defense. Don't be fooled by a lie, but if you're breaking up with him because you aren't sure of his motives -- and you have no evidence to prove he really isn't in the relationship for the right reasons -- it's worth letting him explain his point of view.
5Tell him that you're sure of what you want, assuming you're really ready to break up. Thank him for the good times -- if it feels right -- and leave or ask him to leave so you can both start to heal.
6Set up a time to exchange items you've left with the other. Make it within a week after the breakup.
