Getting over a breakup can be a challenge, especially if ending the relationship wasn't your idea. Immediately after a breakup, it may seem impossible to enjoy life without your ex-boyfriend or husband or even go through your day without thinking about him. This stage of grief and heartbreak is normal. With time, however, the pain will fade and you'll move on. Making positive choices, such as talking to a friend instead of reaching for a drink, helps you recover from a breakup faster.

Talk to a trusted friend. Sharing your feelings and getting support helps you start healing. Choose a friend who will listen to you, keep your secrets and not judge what you're feeling.
2Put away mementos, such framed pictures or gifts, from your ex. Looking at these items won't help you move on. If you feel there is no way you'll ever think positive about your ex again, you may wish to discard these items instead of simply put them in storage.
3Get some exercise, even if you don't feel like it. Cardiovascular exercise reduces depression and anxiety and boosts your energy levels.
4Eat a balanced, healthy diet. It's easy to reach for chocolate or junk food when you're upset, but you'll feel better if you eat a nutritious diet.
5Write in a journal. Writing in a journal allows you to honestly express your ideas and feelings. Writing down your thoughts can also help you avoid dwelling on them; once they're written down, you may be able to easily move on.
6Concentrate on relaxing or pampering yourself. For example, get a massage, go for a hike, listen to soothing music or watch your favorite movie.
7Stay busy. Don't stop going to class or stop hanging out with your friends because of a breakup. Staying in bed all day may seem tempting, but you'll feel better if you get up, get dressed and participate in your normal activities. If you feel you must be miserable initially, give yourself a limit such as 2 days to feel this way. After 2 days, resume your normal activities.
8Try not to think about your ex. Resist the temptation to look at his Facebook page or ask friends how he's doing. In addition, let go of blame -- focusing on yourself and your new life is more important than analyzing the breakup or its cause.
9Be patient with yourself. Grieving and recovery takes time, so don't expect to feel better immediately.
