How to Communicate With a Difficult Ex Boyfriend

Breakups are a difficult time in both the boyfriend's and the girlfriend's lives. When a relationship ends badly, it can be hard to face each other. A man may feel his pride is hurt if he's dumped, may hold a grudge or may simply be the type of person to cut someone out of his life. When you have items at his house or official matters such as rent or bills to take care of, it's important to communicate. However, if your boyfriend is being difficult, you may need to reach out to him in a creative manner.

Instructions

Speak in a calm demeanor. Even if he is being difficult, it's important to be respectful and come off as the more mature one. Explain why you are speaking (for example, you need to pick up some items at his house or you have a pet you need to decide the future of). Be fair and listen to what he has to say and make a decision that benefits both of you.

Text or email if he won't answer his phone to speak with you. Though it's difficult to communicate well through written word, leave the option open for him to communicate with you this way. When you are texting or emailing, it keeps discussions short and to the point. You may run into problems in which he doesn't reply in a timely manner. Ask that he work with you to communicate about your situation.

Ask a friend to talk to your ex-boyfriend. Keep the details to a minimum if possible, but ask your friend to retrieve your belongings or to find out the information you need. Your boyfriend may be more comfortable and calm speaking to someone besides not you.

Speak with a lawyer to talk to your boyfriend on your behalf if you have matters such as loans or rent lingering at the end of your relationship. If both of your names are on the lease or bills, you are both responsible. If he is avoiding you, a lawyer may be able to help.
