Tips on a Guy Friend Who Doesn't Feel the Same Way

When you have feelings for a guy who just wants to stay friends and not take things to the next level, it is important to remember that he's still your friend who genuinely wants to hang out and do the things that friends do. Think about how comfortable you feel spending time together now that you've come to realize that he doesn't feel the same way.

Whether your guy friend has made his disinterest clear or you are picking up on it because of his behavior, accept the fact that your friend doesn't feel the same way that you do. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to be in denial or to think that you can change his mind and "make him love you." If you start thinking that you can do something to change his mind, you might be in for further disappointment down the road.

Just because your guy friend doesn't feel the same way, it isn't a reason to think that the world is over. Since there are plenty of fish in the sea, try to refocus your attention to see who else is out there. You might have spent too much time and energy focusing on your friend who is emotionally unavailable, thereby passing up other opportunities. Start opening your eyes and scoping out the dating scene to move on past your guy friend who just wants to stay friends.

If your friendship is valuable to you -- and if it isn't too painful -- continue doing things together as buddies. Even though your guy doesn't feel the same way about you as you do about him doesn't mean you can't keep having fun together and experiencing new adventures. Besides, if you make changes to the hang-out schedule, he might know that something is up and suspect your secret feelings for him, so it's important to act naturally. Go to the gym together, take road trips with friends, hang out at the movie theater and do things that friends do.

Now that you know he doesn't feel the same way, you might want to take some time to evaluate what friendly boundaries might look like for you. When you thought there was a chance, you might have gone out of your way to bake him his favorite cookies, do little favors for him and talk to him until the wee hours of the morning. However, you might want to take a step back to see what feels comfortable for you and what doesn't. You can still do nice things for one another as friends, but it's possible that you will want to modify what your personal boundaries are. An example is if he wants to ask you for relationship advice. You will need to decide how to keep your friendly boundaries without allowing your emotions to interfere.
