How to Make Things Less Awkward When First Meeting a Guy

You may think there's no way around having a first date that's not awkward, but it doesn't have to be that way. The first time you hang out with someone that you really like can be nerve wracking. You want to be on your best face forwards so that you can impress this person. A few awkward moments might be inevitable in situations like these, but there are ways to help ease the tension and make you feel more comfortable in the situation.

Meet for drinks instead of dinner. It can be difficult to decide what type of restaurant to take someone that you don't really know. You don't know his preferences or possible dietary restrictions. Dinner also comes with many more opportunities for awkward situations than just drinks. If things go really well, you can always spontaneously decide to continue your conversation into dinner later.

Avoid bringing up your exes. No one wants to hear about his date's ex on a first date. Talking about your ex will make it seem like you're not over him. No one wants to start dating a new person that comes with baggage from past relationships.

Keep your date short. When you're just getting to know each other, there's no need to have marathon eight-hour dates. If you spend this much time with someone on your first date, you're just asking for awkward moments. Plus, if you decide that you don't like him, you're trapped in a situation with this person for hours to come. Keep him wanting more by making your first date short and sweet.

Go easy on the alcohol. A drink or two can help to ease your nerves, but six drinks can make you downright sloppy. Keep your alcohol intake to moderate amounts in order to maintain control of yourself. Getting drunk on your first date with someone will definitely lead to awkward moments.

Meet your date wherever you've agreed to have your first date. This way you can also part ways on neutral territory.
