Relationships can't always last. When it's time to break up with your significant other there are numerous ways to go about it. Even though many consider it tactless and rude to break up over the phone, it's one of the easiest methods of ending a soured relationship.

Consider why you want to break up over the phone. Dumping someone by phone may be the best option when there's a reason to believe they may become violent, the relationship has been short, or when in a long distance relationship.
2Write down the summary points of what you want to say. Cover why you feel the relationship can't move forward and it's time to end it before it gets any deeper.
3Practice the speech. Read what you wrote aloud to see how it sounds. Use a tape recorder or other recording device to hear how it sounds and consider taking out any negative sections or changing your tone of voice to sound less harsh.
4Call them. Dial their phone number and wait for them to answer. Be direct and skip over the small talk. Read your prepared speech calmly and in an even tone of voice Wait for their response.
5Show respect. Listen to what they have to say and allow them to express their emotions. Let them know that you respect their feelings. After a few minutes have passed tell them goodbye and hang up the phone.
