Dating violence, also referred to as "spousal abuse" or "domestic violence," can be one of the most difficult problems to identify. Those who suffer from such abuse will hide it from friends and family, and the cycle of abuse can last for years if there is no intervention. There is no one universal cause of dating violence, but there are a number of different factors that can lead to spousal abuse.
Self-Esteem Issues
One of the reasons that one individual abuses the other is a simple matter of the abuser having low self-esteem. A person with low self-esteem may feel like they are unworthy of a relationship with their spouse. Over time, this insecurity can evolve into jealousy or even resentment, and abuse can be an end result of that resentment as the abuser finds that the amount of control and power they feel from the abuse makes them feel more confident about their spouse.
Alcohol and Drug Abuse
Alcohol and certain types of recreational drugs can weaken a person's impulse control, as well as make the abuser more irritable than they would be otherwise. While this is in no way true of everyone who frequently uses alcohol or recreational drugs, some can turn their irritability and lack of impulse control on their spouse. The end result of this is often verbal or psychological abuse, though the situation can escalate to include physical violence.
Stress
Stress, such as a sensitive family situation or loss of employment, can lead to the abuser taking their troubles out on their spouse. Abuse from economic stress is especially troubling, as some people will insist on staying in such a relationship for fear of not being able to make it in the present tough economy on their own. Abuse stemming from stress may become less frequent once the abuser's life situation has improved, though that is not always the case.
Upbringing
Believe it or not, some people simply may not know better. If the abuser was raised in a "broken home," where one of the parents was habitually absent or, even worse, a home where one of the parents was frequently abused by their spouse, they can adopt such behavior. Unlike other reasons behind the abuse, which can be traced back to decisions made by the individual, this reasoning requires an extended period of therapy and "deprogramming" to remedy.
