How to Get Your Boyfriend to Be More Reasonable

If you think your boyfriend is consistently unreasonable, you may want to try to change his behavior. This is not easy, and indeed there will be certain elements of his personality that you simply cannot change, no matter how much you try to do so. You can make a few changes, though, but it does take patience, dedication and consistency.

Define "unreasonable." There's a difference between being unreasonable -- which is being attached to one idea or opinion without listening to other options -- and simply disagreeing with you. If your boyfriend does not agree with you, but he took the time to listen to you, then he's not being unreasonable; he's just a different person, which is why you're dating him in the first place.

Listen to him when he talks. You should also ask questions and rephrase what he says so that you know exactly what he is saying. This is simply a good thing to do when you are in a relationship with someone. However, he should also listen to you. If you listened to him, you can tell him that since you did so, he now has to listen to you.

Ask him if he understands your point of view. If he does, and can explain it, then he's being reasonable. If he can't, then ask him what he doesn't understand.

Be honest and specific with him about how you feel. Rather than just tell him he's being unreasonable, tell him exactly how he's being unreasonable, and how that makes you feel. This will give him a clear "road map" with which to change his behavior.
