Dominant Vs. Abusive Relationship

Finding the person of you dreams and falling in love is the fairy tale that many seem to be chasing. For a woman, finding that knight in shining armor to save her from the struggles and toils of everyday life can be a relief. However, at what point does protective become obsessive?

Extreme Jealousy

Unreasonable or unfounded jealousy is a clear danger sign. Many abusers are afraid of losing their victim. Abusers justify their jealousy by saying they love someone so much that they don't want to lose them. A dominant personality simply makes their opinions known without condescending behavior.

Controlling

Does the love of your life feel the need to keep tabs on everything you do, everywhere you go and everyone you see? Abusers typically control your social and financial life to keep you reliant on them. A dominant partner also tends to take control of the situation but not by undermining your plans.

Isolation

In a dominant relationship, your partner will be concerned with the people that you associate with but will not prohibit it. An abusive mate will criticize your friends and family and try to sever any connection you have with them. The goal is to keep you within his grasp, making you even more dependent.

Demeaning Behavior

Abusers will often put their partner down and tell them they are nothing and that no one else wants them. Dominators will try to make you feel at ease with the person that you are and help you to be more confident.

Seek Help

These are not the only warning signs to look for. If you feel unsafe in your relationship, talk to someone you trust and get the help that you need. A submissive personality might very well feel at ease with a dominant partner but it is important to know the difference between dominance and abusiveness.
