How to Prevent Dating Violence

The Center for Disease Control classifies dating violence as the use of abusive behavior by one person in an intimate relationship. It can include physical abuse, as well as verbal and sexual abuse. Many people who are abused are adolescents who don't realize they are being abused. According to the CDC, one in 11 adolescents is a victim of physical dating abuse. It is therefore imperative to ensure people know what dating violence is and how to prevent it. Dating violence can happen at any age. According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, one in six women will be sexually assaulted. Prevention of dating violence is possible using proper methods.

Instructions

    1

Speak to your family and loved ones about abuse. If you have adolescents, make them aware of healthy relationships. Explain unhealthy behaviors. A person needs to recognize the signs of abuse early in life, allowing her to make better decisions.

    2

Show love in your relationships around your family or children. Do not engage in yelling or name-calling in front of children. Be a positive role model.

    3

Support teaching children in schools about violence and dating. Provide pamphlets and information to students. Provide resources to call if they need help. Young people need to learn the signs of abusive relationships and the steps that can be taken to stop abuse.

    4

Encourage someone to get counseling if you suspect they are in an unhealthy relationship. Be calm, supportive and explain that you are worried.

    5

Call a hot line, such as the National Center for Victims of Crime at 1-800-FYI-CALL. You also can call a local hot line in your area. Speak to someone about your concerns and what you fear may be abuse.
