How to Leave a Psychopathic Boyfriend

One of the worst nightmares in life is to date a psychopath. Such people are detached from basic standards of human behavior: They are controlling and dominant. If your boyfriend is one of them, extricating yourself from the relationship might prove difficult. But there are certain measures you can take to ensure you walk away from your relationship with such a man without escalating the situation.

Instructions

    1

Recognize the symptoms of a psychopath, which include forceful behavior. A psychopath uses coercive behavior to control and dominate you. An abusive boyfriend controls your dressing, behavior, money, job and social life. Your relationship is so delicate that you spend most of the time trying to avoid angering him. The longer you stay in a relationship, the more he makes you feel his behavior is entirely your fault. That's psychopathic behavior. You must leave before your entire mental defenses are broken.

    2

Plan your exit carefully. It is possible that you may face problems, especially if your relationship was serious. Tell him you need to have some time alone to re-evaluate your feelings about him and determine whether you still love him. It is not easy to get out of such a such an abusive relationship, because usually you're been weakened mentally and emotionally, and your self-esteem is likely severely bruised -- even for those with usually high self-esteem.

    3

Leave for good once you separate from him. Don't look back once you make a decision to leave. A psychopath panics at the idea of a breakup unless it is entirely his own. Psychopaths behave the way they do because they want to feel power, according to Sheridan D. Corde writing for the Made Man online men's magazine. The Psychologist Joseph M. Carver writes in his article "Warning Signs You're Dating a Loser" that once the psychopath knows you're serious about not coming back, he tries to convince you to rescind your decision. He will try to lure you back through phone calls and letters. Don't fall for anything he says, or for a change in his behavior.

    4

Find friends or relatives with whom you can stay. Alternatively, look for a shelter where you can get assistance with accommodations and legal support. Such shelters help abused women with job placement if you're unemployed.

    5

Work out a custody agreement if you have children. Don't meet with him alone; ensure that someone else accompanies you. If you feel threatened, don't hesitate to seek a Protection From Abuse (PFA) order. If it is after business hours, call the police directly and they will direct you to a judge who is on call. The judge will grant an emergency order, which will last until the next business day to allow the courts to open. If you don't go to court, your PFA will expire and the police will no longer be responsible for your safety.
