Some claim two people of the opposite sex cannot be friends because at least one is attracted to the other person. Others say platonic friendships may exist whether or not if either party is attracted to the other. A third person in the picture, whether the person is a romantic partner or a friend, further complicates the scenario. Is it possible to have a relationship and a friend of the opposite sex? Four issues should be considered in such a situation.
Opposite-Sex Friendships
Some people think that two people of the opposite sex cannot be friends because they believe that at least one of the two is attracted to the other. Attraction on either side can damage a romantic relationship that one of the two has with someone else. It is best if neither friend is attracted to each other and it is truly platonic.
Timing
If two people of the opposite sex are friends before one is involved in a romantic relationship with another person, the new person in the picture should accept the circumstances as they are. If, however, a person in a romantic relationship suddenly befriends someone of the opposite sex, the question would naturally come to mind, "Why is he making friends with her? Are they looking?" Timing makes a difference.
Trust and Honesty
A relationship cannot last without trust and honesty. Each person in a romantic relationship needs to know and feel their partner is telling them the truth. If someone cannot trust the person with whom they are romantically involved, then having a friend of the opposite sex could makes things even worse. If, however, there is trust and honesty, then having a friend of the opposite sex may be fine.
The Three Together
One way to deal with a romantic partner who has a friend of the opposite sex is to ask to be included when they spend time together. The friend of the opposite sex must have some qualities that are appealing since the romantic partner enjoys the friendship. It stands to reason that they may get along and have some common interests if they are friends with their partner. Plus, being included could help the situation.
