How to Date a Mommy's Boy

Dating a mommy's boy can be challenging for a woman. It takes perseverance, patience and a lot of empathy. Above all, you need to have certain amount of independence to counteract your partner's co-dependence on his mother. There will be many times that you are not put first in the relationship, and you must have the strength to deal with it. In the end, you will hopefully develop a bond with his mom, which will make it easier on everyone.

Meet the rest of the family as soon as possible. Even if you do not meet his mom right away, having other relatives that already know and like you will make it easier for her to accept you as well. Having other family members who are nice to you will also help take the edge off any stinging situations you may find yourself in if she doesn't accept you at first.

Talk to her about her favorite subject, her son. When trying to get on anyone's good side, the standard etiquette is to stay away from controversial topics like politics and religion. This is especially true when dating a mommy's boy. Steering any touchy subject over to your boyfriend will get her smiling in no time.

Offer to do things for her. If she needs a ride to the store or someone to do chores around the house, be the first to volunteer. Not only does this mean extra time for her to get to know and love you, it will take some of the responsibility off your boyfriend as well. He will be grateful to see the effort that you are making at having a relationship with his mom.

Stand up to your man--and her, slowly. If he breaks a date because his mother needs something, tell him how disappointed you are and ask for a compromise. Say something like, "Why don't we go over to her house together, and we can get the task done twice as fast? Then we can at least still make it to the movie even if we can't have dinner." Then be as cheerful as possible when doing it.

Stay calm in any situation. Any tactic you use to get close to his mother may backfire if she feels threatened of losing her son. Even if she does get downright nasty to you, tell her simply that you are sorry that she feels that way, but you will not discuss it until she has has some time to think it over and cool off. When attempting to learn how to date a mommy's boy, realize that it may take a lot of time before you are considered part of the family in the matriarch's eyes.
