Facts & Myths About Jealousy

Jealousy is an emotion that is present to some degree in most, if not all relationships. It is not a rational emotion, nor is it a particularly healthy emotion, but this doesn't mean that it should be ignored. Rather, it should be confronted and dealt with head-on. It is easiest to do this if you have some of the major facts and myths available to you.

Fact: Insecurity

One fact you need to know about jealousy is that it usually stems from insecurity. While you may feel like you're mad at your partner because of the way he's talking to another woman, the reality is that the feeling probably comes from your insecurities. You're not really upset at how he's acting, but rather are just being reminded of your own insecurities in the relationship -- that he'll cheat on you or leave you for someone else.

Fact: Intoxicants

Jealousy can be exacerbated through intoxicants. If you occasionally have jealous feelings, but put them aside when you feel them because you recognize their irrationality, alcohol or another intoxicant may take away your ability to do this. So, if you notice that you only get jealous when you're drunk or on your fifth coffee of the day, you should try eliminating these things from your life. If jealousy goes with them, then it was worth it.

Myth: All or Nothing

Jealousy is not a binary state. It's not like pregnancy, where you either are or aren't. Rather, jealousy is on a sliding scale. It is possible to be a little bit jealous, and it is equally possible to be extremely jealous, to the point of not allowing your girlfriend to talk to other men when you're around and becoming afraid whenever she's not right next to you. So, if you feel a slight pang of jealousy, don't worry about it -- a little bit of jealousy does not make you the same as the obsessive example mentioned above. Indeed, a little bit of jealousy can even be flattering, as long as it's not out of control.

Myth: Incurable

If you've had jealous tendencies with all or most of your partners, you may come to the conclusion that it's just who you are, and your partners are going to have to deal with it. This is a cop-out, though. Jealous tendencies can be changed, either by doing things (like exercise) to increase your self-esteem, letting your partner earn your trust by letting him go away for a weekend without texting or calling him, or doing a variety of other things that will objectively prove that the sources of jealousy tend to be the stuff of imagination rather than anything to actually worry about.
