How to Know When to Give Your Boyfriend Space

The best relationships are those in which the two individuals maintain some sense of autonomy; they have a few platonic friendships, hobbies and interests outside the relationship. You will know your boyfriend needs space when he asks for it; otherwise, it is more difficult to tell. Be aware of his feelings by communicating often, and make sure you both have free time to pursue your own interests.

Ask your boyfriend if he needs space. If he says "No," but you still sense he is restless or tense, take time apart, even if only for a few minutes. Allow him to read a magazine, talk on the phone with friends or take a walk.

Assess your relationship. Frequent fighting, jealousy or feelings of restlessness could simply mean you need some time alone. Give your boyfriend space to release pent-up energy by playing sports, spending time with friends or pursuing hobbies.

Write down your schedule for the past week. If you spent almost every hour with your boyfriend, you both need space. Even if the two of you are on vacation together in a foreign country, give him time alone by taking a solo walk or going to a cafe by yourself. If it is not possible to spend time apart physically, allow him quiet time to check emails or watch television.
