How to Heal a Broken Heart Over a Teenage Boy

A broken heart hurts, but the pain won't last forever even though it may feel like it will. The key to healing a broken heart over a teenage boy is all in the timing. There's a time to grieve over the death of the relationship and there's a time to focus on living again. The key to making this transition is knowing when you're ready.

Cry it out. Spend a weekend looking at old photographs, listening to your favorite songs, calling friends, eating ice cream, watching romantic movies and generally wallowing in your hurt feelings. The pain you're feeling is part of the healing process and it's important to grieve.

Write a letter. Therapists often recommend journaling because it's a good way to articulate your feelings in a concrete way. After your weekend of wallowing, write a letter to your boy that expresses everything you think and feel about the relationship and the break up. Be sure to include the good, the bad and everything in between.

Don't finish the letter in one sitting. Carry it around with you. Every time you think about your ex or the relationship, write down a new line or paragraph.

Once you've run out of things to write in the letter, that's your sign that you're ready to close the old wounds and start to heal your broken heart. Tuck the pages away in your diary, burn them or reread them to remind yourself of those feelings. Just don't send it.

Get active. A weekend wallowing on the couch is all the mourning time that's healthy. Although you may still feel brokenhearted and blue, the best remedy is to pretend that you feel better until you really do. Plan activities to do in your spare time. Maybe there's a hobby you want to start or club that you want to join. Maybe you neglected your friends during the relationship and now is the prefect time to reconnect. It doesn't matter what you do, as long as you start the process of living life without him so that you can realize that the end of your relationship is not the end of the world.
