First Date Gifts for Guys

Be careful about bringing a guy a gift on your first date -- you don't want to come across as being desperate to buy his approval. However, if you find an inexpensive token that seems perfect for the occasion, it's okay to give him a small gift, especially if you asked him out. Find something funny that will break the ice, or an item that is relevant to a discussion you've had or a joke you've shared. The gift should be inexpensive and you should present it in an offhand, lighthearted manner -- keep it casual.

For a first date to a school prom, ball or similar occasion that requires formal wear, present him with an elegant bouttaniere. If you know what he will be wearing, choose a blossom and trimmings that will coordinate with his outfit; however, a white boutonniere is always appropriate. Avoid anything too showy unless you are sure it matches his style. If you're picking him up for a more casual date, bring him a single long-stemmed bloom and hand it to him with a flirtatious smile.

You may have had long, intense phone discussions about literature with your date before meeting him. If so, bring him a slim volume by a poet you know he admires or the latest paperback by his favorite mystery writer. He may also enjoy a book about a person he admires or an activity that interests him. Give an amateur photographer your thrift-store find of Ansel Adams' prints. Give the latest copy of a collector's magazine to a baseball card fan. A book is the ultimate in casual gifts that say, "I saw this and thought you might like it," and it shows that you paid attention during those phone conversations.

Give your date a gift that will help you both laugh at the awkward getting-to-know-you moments of a first date. Get past those first few tense minutes by presenting him with an amusing gift. It's hard to remain aloof when you're both giggling over a set of chattering teeth or a wind-up plastic sushi. Toys that require a little practice to master such as paddle balls or interlocking wire puzzles will give you the opportunity to play together, not to mention the possibility of bragging rights later in the evening.

Giving him a gift that you pick up during the course of the date is an alternative to meeting him at the door with a wrapped offering. Lure him into a photo booth for a picture session. When the photo strip processes, cut it in half so you each get a couple of the pictures. Pick him up a souvenir from wherever your date takes you, whether it's a concert t-shirt, a shot glass bearing the name of the beer garden where you met, or enamel chopsticks from a gift shop you browsed through in Chinatown. When he sees the gift later, it will remind him of the fun you had together.
