Verbal abuse can harm anyone who witnesses it, including children, friends and family. Verbal abuse lowers self-esteem, self worth, and the overall image of the victim. In many instances, the abuser does not realize that he is hurting the other person. Making him aware of his actions and providing a support system might be able to help an abusive person overcome his abusive nature.

Approach the abuser during a calm time. Ask to speak privately. Go to a quiet area and begin by stating that you have something you want to discuss.
2Express how you feel about the verbal abuse. Cite examples of things said in the past that have upset you or others. If abuse is turned on you, calmly say that what's being said right then is what hurts or upsets you.
3Ask the person to consider seeking help for anger and verbal abuse problems. Suggest an anger-management class or that the person should speak with a professional. Be supportive throughout the conversation and say you will help throughout the process.
4Contact the National Domestic Abuse Hotline if the person will not consider seeking professional help. Representatives will provide you with additional methods of getting the point across to him that change is needed. Dial 1-800-799-SAFE to speak with domestic abuse representative about a resolution.
5Suggest that the person call the National Domestic Abuse Hotline if anonymity is a concern. Representatives can suggest alternative methods to dealing with anger or any other issues there may be.
