The signs of an unhealthy relationship vary among couples. Some relationships are unhealthy because both partners have grown apart emotionally and they no longer share the same goals, have the same interests or make each other happy. In more extreme cases, there may be evidence of emotional, physical or sexual abuse in the relationship. The biggest indicator of an unhealthy relationship is the predominance of stress, frustration, fear or sadness experienced. While it's true that even good relationships will suffer from occasional arguments and disappointments, relationships are meant to add happiness to your life. If you find that your relationship is causing more harm than good, breaking up may be the best option.

Prepare to be without your partner. Take the steps to separate your finances, living arrangements, or other logistics binding you to your partner. If you have a child together, consult with a family law attorney regarding your parental rights and responsibilities.
2Spend a few days apart from your partner with no contact. This time apart will help you to distance yourself emotionally and will give your partner a clue that a breakup is imminent so he can emotionally prepare.
3Practice your breakup speech so you are clear on what you will say. Be honest and direct and refrain from saying things that will give your ex hope that you will reconcile in the future.
4Meet in person to execute the breakup. Breaking up via text message, e-mail, social media websites, or telephone is insensitive to your ex's feelings and may make it more difficult for him to achieve closure and move on. Meet in a public place if you are concerned about him responding in an aggressive or violent manner.
5Do not call or try to be friends with your ex for at least eight weeks after the breakup. You both need this time apart to adjust to your new life without each other.
