Because anger is one of the most commonly experienced emotions, it is a common misconception that anger affects people only psychologically. However, anger has noticeable effects on both the body and the mind. By understanding the way that anger affects people, you can create successful strategies for managing your anger.
Increased Breathing Rate
The increased breathing and heart rates that are associated with extreme anger are often the first signs that your anger is beginning to rise to an uncomfortable level. People may notice their breathing and heart rates rise when they are angry, because of the "fight or flight" response. This "fight or flight" response causes your body to become ready to get rid of a situation that is causing you to get angry or upset, by increasing blood flow to your muscles and brain.
Muscle Tension
When your anger lasts for an extensive period of time, you may notice that it causes muscle tension, which can lead to other painful effects. When you become angry, you may tense your muscles for a long period of time. By tensing your muscles for this long, you can cause headaches, neck pain and backaches. You can also drain your body of the energy it needs to function at its highest potential, which will cause you to feel tired and fatigued after a period of anger.
Loss of Perspective
C. George Boeree of Shippensburg University cites a loss of perspective as one of the key psychological effects of anger on a person. When you become angry, it is easy to forget that the world does not revolve around the situation that is causing your anger. You may become paranoid about the situation that is causing you to feel angry. You may think that the person who did something that made you feel angry is out to get you. The next time that person does something to you, even if they are trying to be nice, you might assume that they are trying to get under your skin.
Change in Behaviors
Anger often causes the behaviors that you typically exhibit over time to change or even disappear. This is why your close friends and family members can usually tell right away when you become angry about something. If you are usually an outgoing person, you may become closed off to others when you are angry. Talking with other people may be difficult when you are feeling angry, because you may be lost in your own thoughts of anger. You may feel sad, afraid or hopeless as a result of your anger as well.
