How to End a Live-In Relationship

You may want to end your live-in relationship for reasons of emotional or financial immaturity, infidelity, loss of interest, or perhaps simply because the both of are going in different directions. The ending of a live-in relationship is often difficult and painful because you shared many secrets, memories and goals together, and now you have the task of healing emotionally from the pain of this separation. Yet, with support from others and some counseling, you'll be able to move on and learn from the situation.

Discuss the problems that are leading to the end of the relationship. If you're ending the relationship because your partner refuses to contribute financially and instead leaves the financial burden to you, mention that you can no longer carry all of the weight and this is why you're ending it. Or if you decided that you're simply no longer interested in a long-term relationship, tell this to your partner.

Be respectful. If you appreciate how your significant other has always been there for you during some of your most difficult times, say that although the both of you will no longer be a couple, you still appreciate the concern and generosity shown to you throughout the relationship. Avoid insulting comments about your partner's character because this will only increase the tension.

Discuss any legal issues that may arise due to the breakup. Write a separation agreement that states which possessions you and your partner will keep or take once the relationship ends. Go with your partner to the public notary to have the agreement notarized. Meet with a lawyer before going to the notary to get suggestions on what should be included in the agreement. Research your state's laws regarding the rights of unmarried couples who live together.
