When you end a romantic relationship, oftentimes the ideal outcome is interacting with your ex as little as possible. When you share a workplace with your ex, running into him is inevitable. Being prepared to face him on a daily basis is your best defense against the uncertainty and awkwardness of continuing to work together. Your employer expects professionalism while you are on the job. Maintaining a good working relationship with an ex who is also your coworker is required.

Find another place to work if you are not comfortable working with your ex, especially if you were in an abusive relationship. If you are on reasonably good terms with him, ask him to seek a position with another company as an alternative. Inform your human resources department of the situation so that company gossip doesn't get you into trouble.
2Talk it over with your ex outside of work. Explain to him that you don't want the breakup to have a negative effect on your job. You should both commit to not discussing prior relationship matters with other coworkers to keep to a minimum the office gossip.
3Limit conversation with your ex-boyfriend while on the job. The more you two converse, the higher the chance of the conversation being focused on your prior relationship. If you have to talk, keep it professional.
4Request vacation days at work and take time off. A few days away from the office give you and your ex-boyfriend time to cool down and think things out. Time apart can lessen the chances of an office quarrel between the two of you.
5Report abuse or harassment to your human resources department immediately. Learning to work with an ex is one thing; working with an ex who is abusive is not safe. Your company has a responsibility to keep you safe in the workplace, and by law it has to investigate claims of abuse and harassment.
