How to Resolve Conflict in a Borderline Couple

If your relationship is on the borderline between breaking up and making up, it's time for you and your partner to figure out exactly from where your problems emanate and if you want to make the relationship stronger. Both people must be committed to making the relationship healthier if there will be any chance of resolving the conflict. Once you have both become determined to try to work things out, there are some simple steps you can take to improve your relationship.

Instructions

    1

Set up a time and location when you and your partner can meet and attempt to resolve the conflict. Don't try to resolve the conflict the moment it happens. Instead, acknowledge that the conflict exists and plan to deal with it at a later date. If the conflict is small, perhaps only a couple hours of distance are needed. For larger conflicts, give each other space for a few days to really think about the issues.

    2

Respect your partner and his opinions. Understand that it is completely normal and healthy for couples to disagree. The important thing is that both partners talk to each other appropriately and respect each other's opinions. Don't use foul language or hurtful names when resolving conflict.

    3

Get straight to the point. Find out what is causing the conflict and tension in your relationship and address those issues when you meet. Think about ways that each person could make small changes or modify his or her behavior to prevent to conflict from arising again.

    4

Refrain from bringing up past issues and conflicts while working through a new problem. Leave behind you issues with which you have already dealt, instead of trying to use them to make your case during a present conflict. Bringing up old issues only causes hurt feelings and a lack of productivity.

    5

Ask questions. It is important to come to an understanding during conflict resolution, and the only way to truly understand someone else's behavior is to ask her questions. Remember to keep an open mind. It does no good to ask a question if you aren't willing to hear the answer.
