How to Deal With Parents Hating a Boyfriend

Finding a guy you want to spend all your time with is hard enough, but when you finally find him and your parents do not approve of him, the agonizing situation can make your life unbearable. Parents hating your boyfriend --- for whatever reason --- is a frustrating experience, but you can deal with the situation, given the proper understanding and consideration of the circumstances from your parents' perspective. Look at the situation from all angles to decide how you can handle the predicament and if the relationship with your boyfriend is worth the effort --- as it may cause a rift in your relationship with your parents.

Consider the reasons why your parents hate your boyfriend and try to see the situation from their point of view. If you do not feel the reasons are validated, communicate sincerely and honestly with your parents about why you feel they misunderstand him and why they should become acquainted with him first before they misjudge him.

Invite your boyfriend to your home for a casual dinner and give your parents a chance to get to know him in a relaxed setting. This occasion is an excellent opportunity for your parents to ask your friend questions about his hobbies, education, employment or other details about which they are curious, and perhaps they will feel more comfortable about your dating relationship.

Gain your parents trust by always following the house rules, doing your chores and obeying your curfew when you are out with your boyfriend. If they trust you in other areas of your life, they are more likely to trust you when you are dating someone.

Spend quality time with your family and friends, as well as your boyfriend. Show your parents that you do not spend all of your free time with him; let them know he is not controlling you or taking you away from your personal responsibilities, which may be one of the issues they have against him.

Be patient with your parents and give them time to adjust to your relationship with your boyfriend. Sometimes, parents need time to get to know the person you are dating and they need more time to accept him. Give them the benefit of the doubt and understand where they are coming from --- they want to protect you.
