How to Turn Down a Guy's Love Proposal

Though it can be flattering for a guy to express his interest in you, it quickly becomes an uncomfortable situation in which to find yourself if you are not similarly interested. Prevent a string of unwanted phone calls or strategically planned avoidance by turning down his proposal of love with an unequivocal "no." However, do so gently. It isn't necessary to hurt his feelings in the process, and doing so may make you pity him later.

Instructions

Meet in person. Never text, email or phone to tell a guy that his love proposal has been declined. This is rude and will leave him feeling more hurt than if you had the respect to speak with him.

State that you are not interested in pursuing a relationship with him. If you two have gone on a few dates together, chances are that he will want to know what brought you to decide this. If so, be honest with him. If you simply don't agree with his view of the world, let him know that your mindsets are too different for you to continue. If it is an annoying habit that he has, say so, as he will appreciate knowing this before pursuing his next date. Perhaps you are simply at different stages in your relationship, and this is acceptable, too.

Avoid saying ambivalent phrases such as "I think." Saying, "I think we shouldn't see each other anymore," to a guy sometimes sounds like a request for an opinion. Instead, hold your ground and remember that if you are unhappy in the situation, it will soon make both of you miserable.

Compliment him, if necessary. This will allow the parting to be easier for him, as he will go away with a bit of his pride unaffected.

Let him talk. If he wants to debate the issue, allow him this bit of closure. Don't recant your rejection, but show him that you appreciate his opinion. However, if he gets emotional or violent, excuse yourself immediately.
