How to Get an Ex-Abuser to Leave You Alone

An abusive relationship can be toxic long after the relationship is over. The victim of the abuse can carry the emotional scars of that abuse for years afterward, and a large part of the healing involves breaking off all contact with the abuser. Once you've gotten out of an abusive relationship, the abuser may try to contact you either to get you back or to inflict further emotional harm. Getting an ex-abuser to leave you alone requires firmness and diligence.

Instructions

Tell the abuser firmly that you do not wish to have any contact with him again. Once that has been expressed, end the conversation. Do not indulge the ex-abuser in further conversation, because that plays into the abuser's hands.

Change your email and phone number if the abuser is still trying to contact you. While this is a hassle, it can make your day-to-day life less stressful because you won't be worrying every time your phone rings.

File for a restraining order. Fill out the appropriate forms at the local courthouse or check for them online. The court can then issue an order making it illegal for the ex-abuser to have any further contact with you.

Threaten to call the police if the contact continues. Some abusers do what they do because of the sense of power it gives them, but they won't want to risk legal ramifications.

Call the police immediately if any threats are made or implied concerning your safety. Get the threats on file with the police department. Also notify authorities if the ex-abuser violates a restraining order.
