How to Forgive and Forget

According to an article from Harvard Health, forgiving others may actually improve your overall health by reducing stress levels and improving your heart health. When someone hurts you, it may take you a long time to work up the courage and strength to forgive that person and forget about what happened, especially if you were hurt by someone you trusted. Truly forgiving someone is a process that requires dedication and resilience.

    Allow yourself as much time as you need to process the situation and come to terms with the events that took place. Rushing into forgiving and forgetting may cause you to harbor feelings of resentment. Write in a diary or journal about your feelings and communicate with friends and family members about the situation until you feel ready to move on.

    Consider how you would feel if someone were unable to forgive you despite the feelings of remorse you shared with them. Remember that everyone, including yourself, makes mistakes during their lives. You should also focus on the fact that holding anger in your heart for others often causes yourself pain.

    Learn something from the situation. When going through a difficult time it helps to find the silver lining. Each time that someone hurts you or lets you down you have the opportunity to learn and grow as a person. Instead of focusing on the negative, stay positive and be thankful for the lesson you learned.

    Identify positive actions that will help you feel better. For example, instead of holding a grudge against someone you love and giving him the cold shoulder, communicate with him about the pain that he caused you. Ask him why he chose the actions that he did and find out whether he would do anything differently if given the chance.

    Communicate with the person who hurt you. Let him know that you forgive him for the actions he took that hurt you. If you want to maintain a relationship with him, tell him that you want to work things out and put the situation behind you. If you feel that the relationship is not worth saving after the event, communicate with him about that.

    Move on. After you have forgiven him do not bring it up again. Don't mention it in future arguments. Don't talk about it with your friends. Spend more time focusing on yourself by taking up a new hobby, spending more time with your family or reading a good book. Eventually the memory will simply fade into the past.
