Ways to Cope With a Failed Relationship

A failed relationship can leave you confused, dejected, angry or in a puddle of tears. Break-ups are classically "hard to do," regardless of which side you are on. You need ways to cope with what has happened. Establish some strategies in which you take care of yourself and lean on others to help you navigate this difficult period and emerge stronger and ready to take on new challenges.

Understand Your Grieving

The loss of a relationship is an event that produces grief in your life. Do not deny the feelings you experience. Among these grieving emotions are denial, anger and sadness. You might experience several feelings at one time. Accept that you are going to grieve, give yourself permission to take time alone to cry, scream, stomp the floor or hug a stuffed animal.

Venting

At some point following the breakup you will need to talk to someone. Select a friend or family member who is a good listener so you can vent your feelings to her. Tell her what happened, let her help you work out what went wrong, reminisce about what you and your partner did together if you can do so at the time and allow her to comfort you with words of empathy and kindness. You will relieve yourself of much of the stress involved following a failed relationship when you are allowed to let go of the captured emotions.

Develop New Interests

Finding something new and exciting to focus on following a broken relationship is a good way to help yourself heal. Distraction can be good at this time so look for something that interests you. This might be an item on your bucket list such as surfing lessons, learning a new language or exploring a new area you have never traveled to before. Give yourself permission to enjoy the activity and free yourself from constant thoughts of your former lover and your life together.

Take Care of Yourself

Treat yourself with care at this time. A failed relationship can leave you feeling weak, exhausted and dismal. Dont fall into the trap of drinking too much, neglecting sleep, overindulging in junk food or staying on the couch. Instead, treat yourself to good nutrition, long warm baths and energizing exercise. Dr. Pepper Schwartz states in an article for the American Association of Retired Persons that exercise releases the built-up toxins associated with stress, making you feel better physically and mentally. Ask a buddy to check up on you regularly to make sure you are taking care of yourself.

Seek Professional Aid

Sometimes the loss of a relationship overwhelms you to the point in which you need professional help. Reach out to a counselor or support group when you are feeling hopeless, confused or incapable of getting on track with your life. Contact your local mental health agency to find out what services are available in your area. You can also ask your general practitioner for recommendations. Professional counseling can help teach you coping mechanisms that will greatly aid you during this difficult period.
