The adjective "mercurial' is derived from the god Mercury, he of the winged sandals and swift mood shifts. You might find your boyfriend to be as temperamental and inconsistent as the deity in question. Before you despair about your relationship, though, consider the following steps to help you deal with your mercurial boyfriend.

Wait his mood shifts out. Sometimes when he is frustrating you with his constantly changing opinions and decisions all you need to do is have patience until he calms down. It might be that he's simply thinking out loud, in his words and actions.
2Communicate your concerns to him. Good communication is important in all relationships, so be open with whatever's bothering you about your partner's behavior. Explain to him that his shifting behavior is becoming a source of concern and irritation to you.
3Discuss the root causes of his behavior. Often men seem unable to give a firm opinion on something or seem unable to commit to a decision because they are trying to avoid an underlying issue. If that's the case, then you need to find out what the issue is and discuss it, so it no longer gets in the way.
4Seek counseling. While men are notoriously unwilling to see counselors or therapists, if your relationship is on the rocks, it might be his last chance. In extreme cases, unpredictable and inconsistent behavior, or persistently irrational behavior, may be the symptoms of an underlying mental disorder which requires professional psychiatric evaluation and treatment.
5Relax. Alternatively, it could be your own attitude that's the problem. Is he really excessively mercurial, or are you being too stubborn and strict about consistency. Remember that variety is the spice of life. Try relaxing and going with your impulses for once.
6Walk away, if the relationship gets abusive. Sometimes, no matter how much we love somebody, and they love us, circumstances dictate that things just won't work out. If your relationship with him is causing you too much anguish or if he becomes abusive, then you need to consider ending it.
