Five Ways to Prevent an Argument With Your Partner

Relationships involve a great deal of close contact, intimate interaction and open displays of emotions. While there are many positives to these aspects of a relationship, there is also a great likelihood of conflict. While even the healthiest relationships have disagreements, there are many strategies that you can use to help prevent at least some arguments.

Pick Your Battles

No two people are absolutely, 100-percent compatible at all times. Potential conflicts will always be present in a relationship. The important thing to keep in mind is that not every disagreement is worth fighting over. Arguing over trivial matters is an unnecessary source of conflict that can easily be avoided.

Express Issues That Bother You

While you shouldn't feel compelled to fight about every disagreement or annoyance, this does not mean you should ignore the situation entirely. If you find yourself becoming agitated by your partner, take some time to cool off and then calmly discuss the issue with your partner, explaining how it makes you feel and why it bothers you. Together, you can discuss ways to cope with the issue.

Empathize

Empathy can go a long way toward preventing conflicts. If your partner is upset about something, try to understand where he is coming from. Place yourself in your partner's shoes and try to imagine how you would feel if the shoe were on the other foot.

Resolving Conflicts When They Do Arise

Some conflicts are inevitable. While it might be tempting to end a conflict as soon as possible, this should not be accomplished by avoiding the underlying issue. If you simply avoid the issue, it is almost certain to re-emerge at a later date and cause future conflict. One of the best ways to prevent conflicts is to make sure you do not fight the same fight more than once.

Listen

Many conflicts arise out of simple misunderstandings. Taking the time to listen to what your partner is really trying to say can help avoid a lot of conflicts. Rather than jumping to a possibly incorrect and negative conclusion, try to meaningfully figure out what your partner is trying to communicate to you.
