Though it may come as a surprise to die-hard monogamists, infidelity within a relationship isn't necessarily a deal-breaker to others. There are many possible reasons for this phenomenon, ranging from the deeply personal to the sociological.
Social Stigma
Many women feel ashamed to reveal to their friends and family that they've been cheated on, for fear of being seen as inadequate, foolish or even at fault for driving their man to cheat. Even women with healthy self-esteem can feel social pressure to make the relationship work, thereby proving her worth, rather than giving up on the relationship altogether. However, low self-esteem and the need to be loved at all costs can also possess a woman to stay with an unfaithful partner.
Emotional Attachment
Some women simply distinguish between physical and emotional love and value the latter much more highly than the former. If the man's cheating is fueled by sexual desire rather than by emotional conviction, some women are more likely to forgive as long as the man is still emotionally loyal to her. In very extreme cases, this emotional bond can be dangerous, as it can lead a woman to stay in relationships even despite domestic, emotional or sexual abuse.
Practical Issues
Though modern women are less often hindered by financial limitations and the responsibilities of child-rearing, these issues still come into play. When there are tangible assets that are shared between a man and woman, such as shared living spaces, possessions or children, immediate separation due to infidelity is often not feasible.
Acceptance of Cheating
According to Peggy Vaughan, author of The Monogamy Myth, sociology experts estimate that about "50 to 65 percent of husbands and 45 to 55 percent of wives become extramaritally involved by the age of 40." Whether there is biological evidence that humans are polygamous by nature is debatable. However, cheating is a sociological phenomena that is certainly common, and in some people's view, normal, especially in modern times when different lifestyles and views on relationships are increasingly accepted. Therefore, some women are more understanding when their men cheat. (Especially if they're doing so themselves!).
