How Do I Tell My Family My Partner Cheated on Me?

When your spouse cheats on you, you are likely to be emotionally hurt, among other consequences of your spouse's behavior. One way to heal is to communicate with someone close to you, such as a member of your family. For example, you might be particularly close with your mother, father or a sibling and communicate with that person about emotional topics when necessary. Before telling your family about your spouse's behavior, formulate a plan for the best way of doing so.

Instructions

    1

Identify who in your family you want to tell about your spouse's behavior. For example, you might feel the most comfortable telling one or two people, such as your parents or a sibling.

    2

Set aside the right time and place to tell your family. For example, telling them at a family gathering might not be the best choice for you, because word is likely to spread quickly if you don't announce it to them in a group yourself. Either way, you will have to cope with the emotional stress of having your entire family find out about your cheating spouse. However, the family gathering might be the best place, because your family will rally around you and offer emotional support.

    3

Introduce the subject with your chosen family member(s). It is helpful to give the family member some context before revealing the actual cheating behavior. For example, if your family member knows that you are contemplating divorce, broach the subject by saying something like, "I want to talk to you about what is going on in my marriage" or "I'd like to talk to you about why I'm thinking about filing for divorce." This sets the stage for your family member and helps relieve her shock that you were cheated on.

    4

Reveal as much detail about the cheating as you are comfortable telling. For example, you might not be comfortable revealing the intimate details of what you learned. You might simply feel that you should let your family know that this is the reason for your divorce, unhappiness or current state of being. However, you might feel prepared to reveal all of the details as is necessary to make your family understand your emotions and potential course of action, such as a divorce.
