How to Get Through a Mentally Abusive Relationship

Mentally abusive relationships do not have the obvious physical signs of abuse like bruises. Signals of a mentally abusive relationship include the destruction of physical items, use of economic power over another, withholding of approval or affection, and degrading or humiliating comments. Mentally abusive relationships can be between a married couple, friends, family members or colleagues. If you believe you might be in a mentally abusive relationship, you need to be proactive to avoid mental health issues like low self-esteem, loss of enthusiasm and self-doubt due to this abuse.

Instructions

    1

Build your self-esteem. Talk about the abuse to your friends and family who support you. Take steps to build back your confidence, like writing a list of your best qualities.

    2

Tell your abuser that you will not listen to the abuse anymore and that you deserve to be treated better.

    3

Change your behavior. Your words will mean nothing if they are not backed up by action. When the other person in the relationship begins abusive behavior take action, point out their behavior to him, and remove yourself from the situation.

    4

Remind yourself every day of your value, of the good you do, and the person you are. This will help you maintain your confidence, self-esteem and mental strength. Navigating and recovering from an abusive relationship will be a daily battle.

    5

Stick up for yourself. Do not fall back into the role of the victim. You cannot stop standing your ground because if you do, you are volunteering to return to the role of the victim in that abusive relationship.
