Gossip is a natural part of society and communal living, according to Nigel Nicholson's article in Psychology Today, as it binds people together and gives people something in common. However, gossiping can hurt those being gossiped about, or make people feel uncomfortable when the subject is a close friend or family member. Whether at the office, the gym or amongst friends, when you find yourself surrounded by gossipers, and you are insulted by what they have to say, you must decide on the best course for dealing with them.

Ignore the gossip. You don't have to excuse the gossipers' poor behaviors, but you can acknowledge that gossip is gossip, and people will always have something to say. Try to not let it get to you.
2Confront the gossipers. If the gossipers are talking about you or someone you care about, you can stand up to them and defend yourself by telling them that it is rude to talk about people behind their backs. Use a direct approach so that the gossipers know how serious you are about it.
3Tell gossipers that you refuse to participate in the gossip. If you want to protect another person from the gossip, don't share information on that person with the gossipers, who might use the information as fuel for the fire.
4Pay attention to when you find yourself gossiping, and stop. You should serve as a positive example and role model to gossipers by showing them that they do not have to gossip in order to have a good conversation. If your group of friends or co-workers start to gossip when you are around, change the topic.
5Save evidence of harmful workplace gossip, such as text messages, emails or notes. Share the proof with your supervisor if you feel like your reputation in the office is being threatened because of the gossipers.
