Making the decision to move on from a current relationship can be tough for those who feel they are losing not only a romantic partner but also a good friend. Oftentimes, we share our secrets, aspirations and fears with our partners, and we develop strong bonds with them as a result. One of the most difficult aspects of ending a relationship is the sense that we are losing a friend. However, remaining friends with a romantic partner is possible, though may be challenging at first.

Be civil with one another during the initial break-up. Avoid name-calling and accusatory language. Approach the break-up as the end of something special, not as the beginning of a war between the two of you. Being considerate of each other's feelings now will help the both of you to negate bitterness and anger towards the other person.
2Give each other space. It will be important to allow some breathing room after the breakup if you truly want to build a friendship again. Feelings may not have subsided immediately after a breakup and you may find yourselves attempting to get back together instead of developing a friendship. Talk once a week or even a couple of times a month and begin hobbies that direct your focus away from the other person.
3Become comfortable with the idea of your ex dating other people. No matter how long you have been together, you will need to get used to the idea of your ex being with someone new if you want to be friends. While you may feel hurt, anger or even jealousy, these emotions will not foster friendship and may cause your ex to distance herself from you as she kindles a new relationship.
4Start seeing each other socially only after you have completely moved on from the relationship and no longer harbor romantic feelings for one another. This will be important to starting over with a person, as you both acknowledge that you are not upset over anything that occurred during or after the break up.
