Couples break up for a variety of reasons, including one or both partners abusing, not have time for, falling out of love with, not communicating with, acting needy towards or cheating on the other person. Breakups can occur in different ways, including through face-to-face conversations, phone calls or social networks, but they often cause one or both partners to have hurt feelings. There are a variety of ways you can apologize to an ex-girlfriend for a breakup if you want to make amends or form a new friendship or relationship with her.

Talk to your ex in person, if possible, explaining the reasons for your breakup in a truthful manner. Approach or meet your ex in a location where she feels comfortable so that she is more willing to talk. When you speak to her, use a sincere tone and acknowledge your role in the breakup. If you wish to get back together with her or be friends, express that desire honestly but cautiously, as she likely may still carry hurt feelings from the breakup. During the meeting, apologize while also giving her a chance to talk.
2Write a letter, poem, song or email to your ex-girlfriend if you are unable to meet with her in person. Within the written work, explain how sorry you are for your part in the breakup and how you want to make restitutions for your behavior. Express how you want to reopen communication with your ex within a letter, if you wish to do so, without being overeager to avoid scaring her away.
3Send your ex-girlfriend a thoughtful gift that expresses how sorry you are for the breakup. Use information you know about her, such as her favorite hobby, pastime, sports team, store or childhood memory, when choosing the gift. Include a note or letter with the gift to show that you aren't trying to use money to get in her good graces.
4Take your ex to an event or place, such as a dance or theater production, a sports game, a dance club or a nice restaurant, which she will enjoy. Show her a good time using special touches, such as bringing flowers or paying for her drinks, but also have a conversation with her to express your regret over the breakup.
