How to Leave a One-Sided Relationship

If you've been involved in a one-sided relationship for some time now, chances are you're thinking of how to leave the relationship for good. Being in this type of relationship is confusing and you may feel like there won't be any relationship left if you stop contributing 100 percent. Ultimately, you've decided to move on and find a relationship where you feel the other person is working too. Move on with your life, fill it with a social circle and hobbies that inspire you, and eventually you'll meet someone who makes the effort to be with you.

Instructions

    1

Focus on the reasons you've come up with to leave instead of the reasons why you should stay. If you're truly ready to leave your relationship, you must have given it some thought. However, emotions will creep in and make you reconsider. If you're in a one-sided relationship though, the fear of being single isn't a good enough reason to stay.

    2

Accept that your relationship is ending. Regardless of how long you've been with the person, you'll have to picture life without them. It's tempting to try to stay longer because you've made the decision to be in this relationship and you don't want to go back on that, but you know deep down that you have to leave.

    3

Explain to your significant other that you are leaving and why you've made this decision. The person may simply accept it or may try to talk you out of leaving. However, if you've already made up your mind, stick to your guns. Accepting the other person's reasons and excuses shouldn't be enough to change your mind --- you've already thought about every aspect of the decision.

    4

Give yourself the necessary time it will take to heal. You may have been in a one-sided relationship, but that doesn't mean that breaking up up will be easy just because it's the right decision. Let yourself feel the natural range of emotions that are inevitable, from grief to regret and even relief. Remember, though, that these feeling will eventually pass, and that you made your decision for solid reasons.

    5

Refrain from contacting the other person after the breakup. Remember, you didn't receive what you wanted while you two were in a relationship together. Chances are you won't get as much as you need now that you're no longer apart. It can be tempting to talk just one last time, but this won't help you to heal.
