While some relationships are healthy and promote growth and goal-reaching, others are less vibrant. A codependent relationship is just one of the many types of relationships that are less than healthy. In a codependent relationship, both parties depend upon each other to the detriment of each. When trapped in a codependent relationship, you may feel that your relationship is the most important thing in the world and, as a result, not strive to achieve any goals that don't relate back to this relationship, ultimately stopping you from reaching your potential.

Instructions

    1

Pause and consider what you really want. If you have been in a codependent relationship for an extended period of time, you may long ago have stopped thinking about you wants. When you are ready to escape the relationship, it is time to think about these wants again. These wants can be anything from the desire to advance your education to an eagerness to catch up with old friends whom you abandoned because you were too busy tending to your relationship. Create a list of the things you want to serve as a tool to remind you of why you must escape this relationship.

    2

Express your concerns to your partner. Though you have seen that your relationship is a codependent one, your partner may not have yet reached the same conclusion. Sit down with him and tell him what you have noticed about your relationship, explaining why this codependency is a problem.

    3

Create an exit plan. Decide when and how you will leave the relationship. The specifics of this exit plan will depend in large part upon the dynamics of your specific relationship. If you, for example, live with your romantic partner, you may wish to wait until he is out of town to make your exit, allowing for a clean break and preventing what could be a heinous blowup.

    4

Leave the relationship. Follow through with your exit plan, making modifications as necessary. After you leave, avoid rehashing the relationship with your former partner, as having extended sit-down-and-talk sessions will likely just result in your re-evaluating your decision and potentially going back to the same poisonous relationship.

    5

Dive into activities you are eager to do so you don't regret your choice. By dedicating your time to these activities, you can also prevent yourself from falling into relationship-ending-related depression, which could make you want to go back to your partner despite your knowledge that the relationship is an unhealthy one.
