How Does a Breakup Affect a Person Physically?

The Meaning of a Breakup

Few people understand the significance of a breakup. To many it means that one relationship is over and another will eventually begin. But a breakup is more than the end of a relationship; it is a death of a relationship. For some, it is an end that will change life forever. For others, it is fear of the future.

What Happens to the Body

Because there is a connection between the body and mind, the body will respond to emotional feelings. It may enter deep depression that will alter the body's ability to function. Tiredness can overcome the body, making bed rest the only solution. The body becomes so physically exhausted, there is no energy to even take a shower. Deep depression is an escape that allows the body time to rejuvenate from the prior emotional turmoil. The rest should be short lived; if not, seek medical attention.

Other Illnesses

Depending on the person, loss can cause a number of physical conditions. The loss can trigger a sense of fear and dread. Not knowing what the future holds creates stress and emotional turmoil. Besides the extreme tiredness, the body may react with chest pains, body aches, high blood pressure, insomnia, dizziness, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, upset stomach and loss of appetite.

See the Doctor

Because a breakup is similar to death, depression is a serious reaction that a doctor must diagnose and treat. The physician should be alerted to other physical reactions as well. A doctor needs to know what is happening in your life and what you are feeling emotionally. Once the doctor determines that the illnesses are not related to physical issues, then treatment can begin.

Coping With Loss

Once you understand what is happening to your body, a plan of action can begin. The doctor may suggest counseling and/or medication, if depression is apparent. There are actions you can take each day as well. Accept the feelings, but focus on the positive, too. Avoid situations that will trigger the hurt and look for situations that will bring joy. Keep a journal of gratitude and review it often. Meditate or pray. Take care of your body with exercise and good eating habits. It's important not to plan for the future yet. Face one day at a time. The pain of loss will fade, but acceptance of healing as a process is essential. It is actually better to experience the emotions. It will pass, though, and life can go on.
