How to Cope With Depression After a Break Up

Breakups can be devastating to the person being dumped. It challenges your self worth and confidence. Often it can lead to depression which should be treated seriously. Here are some steps to help you help yourself or a friend through this unpleasant time.

Instructions

Managing the Depression

    1

Let your feelings out. Talk to a friend or family member. Don't be afraid to cry on their shoulders and ask for their help and support. The people in your life who love and care about you will be more than happy to help so don't be afraid to ask and reach out to them.

    2

It helps to remove items that remind you of that person or are from that person. You may want to throw them away or just box them up and put them in storage. This is not done to make you forget. It's done so you don't end up focusing on the object and dwelling on what happened.

    3

As difficult as it is, stay with your normal routine of work or school. Keep appointments you may have and in general try to carry on as normally as you did before the breakup. Your heart may not be in it at first, but if you force yourself to go through the steps, soon the rest of you will follow.

    4

Treat yourself to a shopping trip, a movie night, or a friends' night out. Getting out and seeing a lot of people will help to remind you that your former partner can and eventually will be replaced. As cold as it may sound there is something to be said for the old saying that there are more fish in the sea.

    5

If at any time you feel the depression worsening and feel like you can't cope, call your doctor and he can refer you to someone who can help. You are not alone.
