When that sparkling stunner first peeked out at you from its padded box, you likely glowed with love. But if your romance turned sour, that ring may serve as a reminder of failure instead of a beautiful love token. While, in many circumstances, you are not legally obligated to return the ring , many choose to do so. Depending upon the nature of your relationship ending, you may choose to make this return in a number of different ways.

Discuss the give-back in advance. Instead of just showing up, ring in hand, and attempting to fork over the bauble to your beau, talk first about returning the ring. Tell him that you plan to give the ring back, and give him some of your reasons for doing so. Some men are less than eager to take back a ring given as a token of love. By discussing it in advance you can work through any issues that may muddy the exchange and increase the smoothness of your ring return.
2Meet up for a ring give-back. If your break up was a relatively amicable one, give your ring back in a face-to-face manner. Meet him for coffee, give back the ring and have some friendly conversation. Taking this path not only gets the ring out of your possession, it also gives you a chance to work on establishing your new, friendly relationship.
3Send it with a mutual friend. If you simply can't stomach seeing him just yet, ask a friend to help you out. When selecting a friend to return the ring, choose one that is a friend to both of you, not someone who is just your friend and may turn the ring return into an attack or a confrontation of the person who she feels did you wrong.
4Mail it back. If there is a lot of distance between you, or if you simply don't have anyone to help you out and you can't handle a face-to-face return, mail the ring. While this option is certainly less personal than most, it does get the job done. If you choose to mail the ring, inform the recipient via email, text message or phone call that the ring is coming, and take out insurance on the package to ensure that you are protected should it get lost in transit.
