How to End Emotional Connections

No matter the nature of the relationship, the ending of an emotional connection is a thorny proposition. Most commonly, the severing of emotional ties is related to an inappropriate relationship, as in an extramarital affair. Other times, however, it is necessary after a painful breakup. Either way, it's difficult --- but certainly not impossible --- to set emotions aside and take a pragmatic approach to ending the emotional connection. Taking a few simple steps, however, will have you on the path to emotional freedom.

Instructions

    1

Accept the fact that emotion has no place in the relationship. Whatever the reason, your emotional connection needs to be severed if there is nothing healthy about it for you or the other person. This can be tricky; the ending of the connection may be hard to come to grips with as it is sometimes natural to want to continue hashing out issues and attempting to work through the problem. Accepting that things are going nowhere is the first step.

    2

Distance yourself from the person and keep contact minimal. Ideally, you should stop seeing the person altogether but this is often not possible, as is the case with a coworker, for example. But if you must stay in contact, minimize correspondence and keep things professional and civil.

    3

Establish boundaries. The other person may try to contact you, as he may have not reached the acceptance stage like you have at this point. As was stated above, it's important to separate the logical from the emotional and employ a pragmatic approach. If he is particularly manipulative, he may try to tug at your heart strings a bit to get you emotionally connected again. If that happens, cut him off immediately.

    4

Fill the void with both physically and emotionally healthy activities. Ending an emotional connection is tough, especially if the person was a big part of your life. If you end up sitting around after the connection is over, you may become vulnerable to losing your pre-established boundaries or even sinking into depression. Pick up a new hobby, join an exercise class; the point is to establish a new routine.
